Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

At Hands for Hope we passionately believe education can change one's life. With the support from our sponsors, H4H strives to bring basic education to a child where we believe it is either inaccessible or not possible otherwise without external help.

Question: How much does it cost to sponsor a child?

Answer: The cost to sponsor a child varies for each region; typically it costs A$50.00 a year. Sponsorship covers school fees, uniforms, and educational essentials such as note books, stationery items etc.

Question: How do I go about being a sponsor?

Answer: To become a sponsor, you can download and complete the Education Sponsorship form and send it in to us. Alternatively please email us your contact details and the number of students you wish to sponsor. We will contact you to confirm the details and organise for the sponsorship to be processed. Most sponsors prefer to send their donations via direct transfer into H4H bank account (contact us for the account details) or via cheque made payable to "Hands for Hope Inc."

Question: What do I receive as a sponsor?

Answer: Firstly, your sponsorship donation will be acknowledged with an official receipt, together with a profile of the student you are sponsoring. H4H take great care in protecting the privacy and security of the students. The students' profiles are only made available to their sponsors, with the understanding that it is for personal reference and not to be displayed or published in public forum.

At the end of the school year, you will receive the students' school results and when available, letters from the students themselves. You will also receive a renewal notice in which you can decide whether to continue the sponsorship for another year. There is no obligation for renewal and the student loosing your sponsorship will be put back into the queue waiting for the next available sponsor.

Question: Can I select particular student/s to sponsor?

Answer: Yes, you may be able to select particular student/s to sponsor. Usually people can request student/s from a specific region or indicate an age or gender they would prefer and we can accommodate for such request pending on availability.

However, it is not possible to select students based on their photos, as we do not make the student profiles publically available. We take great care in protecting the privacy and security of the students we sponsor. The student's profile is only made available to his/her sponsor, with the understanding that it is for the sponsor's personal reference only.

All the students in our sponsorship program are equally deserving the sponsorship. If no particular request is made, we make the selection for you based on which projects still requiring sponsorship and randomly choose a profile within that project.

Question: Can I call / write letters / visit the student/s I sponsor?

Answer: Yes, it is possible to make contact with the students you sponsor. To protect the privacy and security of the students in our sponsorship program, all contacts must be made through Hands for Hope. Direct visits can only be arranged when our project coordinator is available to accompany you on site.

Please keep in mind there can be logistical difficulties and other sensitive matters to consider when making contact with the students. For example, the remoteness of some regions mean that telephone and postal services may not be readily accessible. Or the student's literacy skills may not be adequate for them to feel comfortable with regular letter writing.

Question: How do I know that my money goes to the student I sponsor?

Answer: H4H's project coordinators directly manage the distribution of the fund and ensure every dollar you donate is accounted for and spent on the students being sponsored.

In addition, H4H has consistently kept our administration cost to less than 5% of our total income. All travel expenses for the regular site visits to monitor the progress of the students are covered by H4H members themselves. We use the internet extensively whereever possible to reduce the cost of mailing and postage. All financial reports are available on our website and we are happy to provide further information for your perusal.

Question: Are donations to H4H tax deductible?

Answer: H4H send all donations over to Vietnam to support disadvantaged children. Therefore we do not currently meet the requirement for tax deductibility (DGR status) which requires a certain proportion of the donations to remain in Australia. We are unable to provide you with a tax receipt, however, we do provide official receipts for your own records.

If you have any other questions or queries please email us or use our contact form above.

Thankyou for your support.
