Walk-A-Thon

And I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

Robert Frost – The Road Not Taken

The above poem by Robert Frost, ‘The Road Not Taken’ has many profound interpretations. The ‘road less traveled’ can be good or perhaps even bad, depending on the choices we make in life. Life can be seen as unpredictable and random.

Basically it is about the ‘choices’ you make in life........ For many children in the third world countries like Vietnam, there is no choice. Take education for example, it is a privileged to go to school in Vietnam if you have the financial support. Without help, the only choice these children have is a life of poverty. Take physical disabilities as another example. Most of us take our health for granted, allowing us to lead independent life and to pursue our goals and dreams. The children born with cerebal palsy or who contracted polio whose family cannot afford the cost of medical treatment, have no choice but to live with their disabilities. They are further disadvantaged impacting every aspect of their daily lives.

Hands for Hope organises a Walk-a-Thon every year to raise enough money to offer this ‘choice’ of a better education and a better life to these children. The walk-a-thon is a great opportunity to spend a day with your friends and families in the park, walking for your own health and at the same time, walking to help the disadvantaged children in Vietnam. This event continually attracts attendance from people of all age groups and background, from community youth groups, to families, to the elderlies. The event also receives support from many kind and generous community organisations, business sponsors and media groups, without whom such an event would not be possible.
