An Bien Educational Sponsorship Project

Location

An-Bien is one of the three districts of the UMinh-Thuong in Kien Giang province in South Vietnam. It is approximately 30 km from Rach Gia town. In order to get to An-Bien you have to travel by boat via two rivers called Cai-Be and Cai-Lon, which takes between 20-25 minutes.

Project Background

An-Bien is not far from a major town, but the living standards in An-Bien is very poor. Most local people are farmers, and many families do not have a farm of their own and have to work for others. The children of poor families do not go to school because of financial hardship.  Life is still difficult for children whose parents can afford to pay for school fees. They still have to help out at home with domestic chores to supplement the family income ( e.g. catching fishes and shellfishes) and have little time to study.

In December 2002, after H4H was introduced to the situation in An Bien, one of our members returned to Vietnam and visited An-Bien. Despite having to endure a long and difficult journey to arrive at this remote area, she was determined to find out more about the area's conditions and villagers. Upon her return to Melbourne, she presented to the group the An Bien project proposal to assist the children of An-Bien , which H4H accepted.
