Nhon Hoi village, Quy Nhon city, Phu Yen Province.
Background for project
Hoi Loc, Nhon Hoi village is an island which is an hour by boat to the east of Quy Nhon city, Phu Yen province. Nhon Hoi has approximately 10,000 inhabitants with the majority of its people working in the farming and fishing industries. Most families are poor and many children do not have access to education . Children who are not at school are often found wandering from place to place, with their clothes soiled and hands and faces dirty.
Current Situation
Nhon Hoi has only one primary school and pupils walk 3-5km to school everyday. In September 2003, H4H together with Pho Dung Tan Dinh Richmond helped renovate an old house to become a 2 classroom school . Four classes are run per day with a capacity of 30-40 pupils in each class.
Project life
Repairs were completed in September 2003, and the project is now involved with ongoing maintenance of the school.
Aims of this project
Repairing and reconstructing the property into a two classroom school "Lop Hoc Tinh Thuong". Providing lessons to underprivileged children to improve their writing and reading skills.
Providing basic education for the underprivileged and the disadvantaged children, with the hope of reducing illiteracy on this island.
Annual Budget
The initial repairs costed a once off fee of AUD 2,000. AUD660/pa is required for ongoing maintenance.

Teacher's salary: AUD 250 per teacher annually (2 teachers in total).
