Hope and dreams of the handicapped children

Today, many disabled children are found in Vietnam's remote country side where access to medical care is limited. They must endure unwanted attention when going out in public, being the subject of stares and pointing fingers. Even though every child has a different experience of handicap and their own unique story to tell, they all share a common thing, a life of suffering and misery, of being an outcast.

before surgery However, they also share a common hope of being able to overcome their disabilities and participate in life as fully and joyfully as other children do. I met and talked to some of these children, and learnt that underneath the disability, there is a normal child struggling to break free.

The thought: "I want my legs to be normal", constantly runs through the mind of Trinh, a 12 year old girl who was paralysed after a febrile illness at 5 months of age. Over time, her legs have developed painful contractures and the muscles have largely wasted away. She is completely dependant on others to get around and often hides away at home to avoid being labeled a ‘retard’. From her house, she watches children of her age play in the street which increases her sadness and low self-esteem. She often ask herself "Why am I not like the others? Why do I have to endure this? What have I done wrong? Why?"

Trinh was born into a poor family with many children. Her parents work as labourers on rice paddies year in year out in a constant struggle to try to make ends meet. With her disability, Trinh tries as best as she can to help out with the house work but is frustrated by not being able to do more. She often cries and whisper to her mum: "I wish we could find enough money so the doctors can fix my legs and I can be like normal people...". Hearing her daughter's wish, her mother can only hold back tears and find soothing words to comfort her daughter.

Please lend a hand to bring a smile to Trinh and other children in Vietnam with disabilities, and give them a chance to lead normal and productive lives, playing in the streets and going to school with their friends.

From having the opportunity to meet some wonderful children with disabilities in Vietnam, we were inspired and determined to start a program that would provide access to surgery to correct their disabilities. After much research and investigation, Hands For Hope has begun the surgical intervention programe.

To date, this program has successfully provided access to surgery for more than 120 disabled children from provinces such as Soc Trang, Chau Doc, Vung Tau, Lang Son…

We would like to present to you the gratitude of a mother of one of these children; and also present the thoughts of a 20 years old man who thought he was dreaming when he was granted surgery sponsored by Hands For Hope.

"My name is Võ Thị Thu Cúc, I am 34 years old and the mother Duong Thuy Quynh who is 11 this year. Thu Quynh suffers from cerebral palsy, which means she cannot walk or move around easily, and that she is prone to many illnesses. Our family situation is one of enduring hardship and poverty; having to care for a disabled child is extremely difficult for us and we often feel we are not doing enough. Either my husband or myself would always have to stay home to care for our child. We did not have any means to seek treatment for our child..."[read letter]

"My name is Nguyễn Văn Mới, I am twenty years old and currently living in Tan My, Cho Moi, An Giang province. I was born a healthy child, but unfortunately when I was four years old, I caught polio and both of my legs became paralyzed. It became extremely difficult for me to move about and participate in every day activities. I believed I would never stand or walk again.."[read letter]

Trẻ tàn tật và những uớc mơ

before surgery Hiện nay, ở các vùng sâu xa thuộc tỉnh lỵ tại Việt Nam còn rất nhiều trẻ em tàn tật, không lành lặn nhu liệt chân, tay, mù … Tuy ở những trẻ này, mỗi em có một hoàn cảnh khác nhau, song các em đều có chung một số phận bất hạnh, có chung sự chịu đựng, mong vuợt qua bệnh tật. Đuợc gặp gỡ, trò chuyện với các em và nghe các em nói lên tiếng nói của mình, tôi càng hiểu thêm ở các em có những suy nghi, tình cảm không giống những em cùng trang lứa. Theo các em “chỉ có phép mầu thì điều uớc mới thành hiện thực”.

“Em muốn đuợc chữa lành chân”, uớc mo lớn nhất, đã ấp ủ nhiều năm của Trinh, cô gái 12 tuổi. Vừa đuợc 5 tháng tuổi, sau lần bị sốt cao (sốt bại não), hai gối Trinh co rút lại, chân em teo dần và em không còn đứng đuợc nữa… Từ đó đến nay mỗi ngày, Trinh không chỉ gặp khó khăn, bất lợi trong di chuyển, nỗi khổ tâm lớn nhất của em là sự tự ti, mặc cảm, là cuộc sống của phận gái tật nguyền. Suốt nhiều năm qua chẳng mấy khi em rời khỏi nhà. Nhìn những bạn cùng trang lứa vui đùa, có đôi chân đi đứng, chạy nhảy, em càng thêm buồn tủi. Em luôn thầm nghi “Tại sao mình không đuợc nhu bao bạn khác? Tại sao mình phải chịu thế này? Tại sao??? Tại sao???”

Em sinh ra và lớn lên một gia đình nghèo đông anh em. Cha mẹ em quanh năm làm muớn. Thiếu truớc, hụt sau, phần em thân tật nguyền chỉ phụ việc nhà. Nhiều lần em khóc và thì thầm bên Mẹ “Mẹ oi phải chi kiếm có tiền chữa chân cho con để con có thể đi đứng đuợc nhu nguời ta…”. Nghe con nói, nguời mẹ chỉ biết nén dòng nuớc mắt vào lòng và tìm lời an ủi con.

Xin các bạn hãy cùng với chúng tôi đem lại cho tuổi tho bất hạnh tại Việt Nam những nụ cuời và để cho những uớc mo đuợc luôn trở thành hiện thực.

Từ những uớc mo đó tôi luôn ấp ủ một hoài bão và quyết tâm thực hiện chuong trình giúp trẻ tật nguyền đuợc phẫu thuật, chữa lành bệnh. Sau một thời gian nghiên cứu và tìm hiểu, Nhóm Góp Một Bàn Tay đã xúc tiến chuong trình này. Cho đến nay đã có hon 60 em thuộc các tỉnh Sóc trăng, Châu Đốc, Vung Tàu, Lạng Son…đuợc phẫu thuật.

Tôi tên là Võ Thị Thu Cúc, 34 tuổi là Mẹ của bé Dương Thúy Quỳnh 11 tuổi. Lúc tôi mới sinh cháu vừa tròn 1 tháng tuổi, cháu Quỳnh bị bệnh xuất huyết não. Kể từ ngày bị bệnh đến nay, cháu Quỳnh không đi lại được, cơ thể không đủ sức đề kháng nên bệnh tật liên miên. Hoàn cảnh gia đình tôi lại rất khó khăn, nuôi một đứa con tàn tật, nghèo khó chất chồng. Một người phải ở nhà để chăm sóc bé, nên gia đình rất khổ. Gia đình chúng tôi không có nhiều điều kiện để chữa trị." [xem thư]

"Con xin chân thành cám ơn các cô!

Con tên là Nguyễn Văn Mới, hai mươi tuổi, hiện ngụ ở Xã Tân Mỹ, Chợ Mới, An Giang. Lúc sanh ra con là đứa trẻ bình thường như bao bạn khác, nhưng điều không may đã đến cho con. Khi lên bốn tuổi, con mắc phải chứng bại liệt hai chân, việc đi lại và những sinh hoạt hàng ngày trở nên rất khó khăn. Con nghĩ có lẽ suốt đời này con không thể hy vọng đi đứng bình thường như các bạn..." [xem thư]
