Cattle Raising

Project Type:

Pilot project in collaboration with partner with a non-profit organisation based in San Jose, California, called Aid to Children Without Parents (ACWP)

Location

Phong Dien District, Thua Thien Hue Province, Central Vietnam.

Aim of project

The Cattle Raising Program provides an income generation project which provides a foundation for the development of economic self-sufficiency and an incentive for children participating in the program to remain in school. Each child is given a calf to care for and an optional educational stipend to cover tuition costs and school supplies. The child must give the first calf born from that cow to a new child designated by H4H. Once this is done, the original cow becomes the property of the child who raised it.

Number of Students:

10 Primary & Secondary Students

Project Life:

Started 2003-2004 – 5 year long-term project.

Budget:

$2764 USD over 5 years for 10 sponsored children as a once off payment.

Administration Details

Cows are given annual vaccinations. ACWP also has a contract with local vets to provide care for the cows when needed. Calves born are given only to children living in the same village.

  • Generally a cow is fertile within 1.5 years. Expert farmers, however, advise that this period may be extended to 2 years. If the first calf born is malef, ACWP staff will provide additional money to exchange for a female calf before giving the calf to a new child.
  • In situations when a cow dies in an accident/natural disaster or from ill health, ACWP staff will also intervene and help the family recover as much as possible. In some cases, this may include additional financial support to replace the cow.

Cattle Raising – Project Growth Expectation

The purchased cow is 6 months old. The female cow can start bearing calves at 2 years old. Based on CRPI results, the projection for CRP II with 100 cows will produce over 250 cows at the end of the 5-year project.

Summary

Poor families who normally seek to raise cows to generate income often do not have enough money to purchase the first cow or obtain vaccinations. Additionally, because they lack experience and other supports, there is a real chance of losing their investment. CRP II provides families in need with financial assistance, cattle-raising experience, and support for at least 5 years, thus ensuring success. Profiles of the 10 children sponsored by Hands for Hope were received in November 2003. All 10 children have received their calves.
